Make sure what diff is in your Monte Carlo . Most 71's That I have seen had 8.2" Chevy / Pontiac 10 Bolts or 12 Bolts . GM did not use the 8.5" 10 Bolt in all of it's Cars entill 1972 . I have seen a Few of the 8.5" Diff's in 1971 Camaros / Novas .
nope had a good friend give me a 410 for my rear. everything on my car said that it was a 8.5 but when i pulled the ring gear it was a 8.2. so now i am hunting around for a 8.5 or a 12 bolt. it is always something.

jyardgirl just Look for a Drum-Drum out of any GM-A-Body Car just about every one of them had the 8.5" diff . That is the best way to go . The 8.5" is the easiest GM diff to find parts and for fair Price's . But it has to be a 1972 Model GM A-Body Chevelle Monte Carlo Buick Skylark Pontiac Lemans or G.P's Old's Cutlass even 4-Doors of these Models . 1973 is differeent . I have seen this type of Drum-Drum for sale on are Local Craig's List for $50-$100 Buck's .
