Here is My 1983 Monte Carlo . Stock it had a 305 4bbl TH350-C and a 2.56 7.5" Open Rearend .
Here is a Photo of the 8.5" 3.73 Posi that I installed that Came out of a 1987 442 Old's . I also installed SSM Lift Bars and new Coil Springs / Shocks . And here is a Video of a SB 350-340 H.P I might install For now . I do have a SB 355 that will be used for this Car .
That 350 is not a Bad Street Build . It started out as a 1979 350 4X4 Craigs List Engine . Then I picked up a Set of 1990 5.7 TPI 64CC Heads from a Member of the Third Gen F-Body Forum . I Rebuild the Heads with New Seals and Z/28 Springs . Installed a Mild camshaft 214/224 at .050" with 443"/465" Lift 112 L/C . Last thing was to Modify an Old Edelbrock #2101 to work with the TPI Heads . And Trick out a BB Chevy Q-Jet . Fire it up with a Curved HEI with Hotter Coil .
Did some work on my Monte Carlo today . It Needs all new Line . The Easy way is to Buy a Pre-Made Brake Line Kit . But at $169.00 Bucks with out the Over Sized Box Shipping Charge ? No Way ! So I went to the Local Auto Store and Bought the Longest 1/4" and 3/6" Steel Line they had Total under $30.00 Bucks . I cut them down and Re-Flare them as Needed . I finished From the Proportioning Valve to the Diff and to both Drums .
Nice project! and the specs on the engine sound good for the street. nice job!
I have a 355 That I am Putting together with Full Ported #601 305 HO Heads for this Monte Carlo Build . Also have a TH-400 Short Shaft Trans with 2800 Stall Speed Converter . But I was think About Trying out that 350 if my 355 is not Done .
Them Heads are Off a 305 HO #601 . They have New everything and Hours of Port work done to them . I would say they are Like Ported Double Hump GM Heads .
Did some more Engine work today . A good part of the day was used to Clean Tin Parts . Had to Look through the Garage and shed for a Timing Cover and Oil Pan . Also had to install a Speedy Sleeve on this Damper that I used . I went with the Melling M55HV Pump and Hardened Drive Shaft . But I ended up using a GM Oil Pump Pick up tube that Fit Better . I used that Summit Brand One Piece Oil Pan Seal . Next time i will try the Fel-Pro Brand .
beautiful engine tango. you really are a artist with the sbc.
I thank you for your good words . Next Warm Day we have I will finish up Painting this engine . And I hope to started it up and Break it in soon on my Test stand . Then it will find it's New Home under the Monte Carlo's Hood

WOW! Lots of work since I checked last! Nice and that that new motor is looking awesome! I'll have to listen to the video when I'm on a better computer, it was too distorted over this wireless laptop.

I did some under Hood Work on the Monte Carlo Today . I cut open the Heater Box and Removed the A/C Coil and Some other Un-needed A/C Parts . Made a Plate so I still can get some Heat out of this Heater Box .
COOL More room for My Headers or a BB
I did a Bit of trimming on the Trans Tunnel . I had one heck of a time removing that Bolt Before
Went out to the Garage today . I got a Late start but I work late . First I have asked two of the Top Forums on 1978-87 G-Body's if the Early Camaro-Nova SB Headers will Fit My Monte Carlo ? Never did get any info from them ? Well today I found out These Headers I bought at a Speed Shop back in 1995 . I bought them for a Camaro I had . I never opened the Box Till today . They where on Sale back then . But not Cheap just over $100 Bucks .
From what I remember they are 1 5/8" Tube Headers . They Look a Little Larger to Me ? That's Ok with the Porting I did to the Heads this 355 will Like them .
I sure could have used an extra hand to install this Engine . I had the Hoist all the way extended and against the bumper . And still needed to go back another 3" . Not a Real Fun day in the Garage
Hey to all them G-Body Forums that Don't Know if the Early Headers Fit . They do but on the Right Side the Header is very Close to the Upper A-arm .
jyardgirl You are a Fine Lady indeed . I am sure you would have helped me . I thank you for that . I ended up using a Long 2x4 Board to push the Engine Back Just Enough to start a Trans Bolt . I am Looking at Extending the Hoist so this won't happen again .

Looking great!!!! I'm shocked you didn't pull the hood! Even more shocked that the motor cleared it!
And all the headers fit really close to the passenger upper control arm! I just installed a set of Summit Racing shortie style headers on My Son's car, I had to grind the control arm bushing flange a bit and dent the header on the underside to make sure it cleared. and then a few more "dings' in the frame to clear the collector flanges

I have found many years back that you don't need to pull hoods off on most Cars when changing engines . And that's good for me Because I never have any Helpers stopping by Looks Like Most Young Folks are not into Hot Rod's these Days Check out my Post had the same Header Problem on my Monte Carlo .
Did what I could today on that Monte Carlo . I had to do some Wiring that I should have done Before I installed this Engine . Also had to Pull out the Right Side Header about 3 Times to Clearance the A-Arm just a Bit that is the Only Place that I see any Problems with these Headers . Don't have extra Cash for new Headers so these will have to be a Go . Then I installed the High Torque Starter and 650 V/S Holley . For now I will give this 650 V/S a Try out . This Holley has many Tango Mods done to it . But Later on one of my 750's will top this Engine .
I sure am getting tired of pushing this car in and out of the Garage . I will be real Happy when it can move and stop on it's own .
I should have Painted that Water Pump Looked Like it had a Good Coat of Paint on it ? I think I will try and spray it main thing is that it run good
Did some late in the day work on the Monte Carlo . Touch up that water pump . Had some Silver Engine Pant in the Garage . Yes that a Cheap Auto Store Iron Water Pump . It was painted Gray when I bought it . I should have just Painted it Orange when I had the Chance Installed the H.V Carter Manual Fuel Pump and Line . Install the Accel HEI Cap and some Stock Type Ign Wires for now . Later on I will buy a Better set of Performance Ign Wires . And a Good set of Ign Wire Holder . I Looked through my Shed and Found a Smaller Crank Pulley and a Single Groove water Pump Pulley . This is much Better then the Set up that was on the 305 . I still can run the P.S Pump . But I am going with a Vega Type Manual Steering Box Later on .
I hooked up the Battery Found out my Positive Cable is no good going to change both of them Old Cables . More Parts More money Like always ? I was able to Test the Power with a Test Light to my Dist wire with my Ign on . Cool this SB will Fire Right up
Took a Look at the 5 Blade Clutch Fan . Na going to pass on using it . I am going to buy a 19" 6 or 7 Blade S/S Flex Fan with a 2" Fan Spacer . Yes this is another Part that Guys today don't use Very often . No need for High Dollar Electric Fans on Budget Hot Rods . I have used Many Flex Fans They work real Good . Also need to buy a Trans Cooler . More Parts More Money Never as Cheap a Build as you would Like
Picked up my Trans Cooler today . My Friend at work had this one new in the Box . He gave it to me for Helping him out . It's a Hayden Ultra-Cool #403 3/4" Thick x 7-1/2" x 12-3/4" . It's not a Bad Sized Cooler . I would say it will be Just Right for my Monte Carlo . Going to run it Cooler to Trans Only with out the Radiator Hook up . Should have My Flex Fan / Spacer Today still need to pick up some Battery Cables Going with Top Post Cables .
they Do work fine, untill the rivets become loose, then they are dangerous, I have seen fan shouds and hoods with blades stuck in them and I've cut myself on them too. just be sure to check the fan periodically for looseness.

One Time I asked the Guys at the Top Monte Carlo Forum What Radiator I could Up-Grade to ? Well I thought they Could Tell me Just Like the Headers ? They Said oh that Stock one will work Great ? Kind of thin to me ? Yes they Make Some High Dollar ones . Maybe I could Find a Budget Aluminum Type . Well I knew I had one in Storage . I think this one came out of a Late 70's Pontiac T/A 6.6 . To the Worlds Largest Monte SS Forum This one Fits But I need to Buy a Late 70's Camaro Upper Radiator Hose for the Larger Radiator outlet . That's also a good thing .
Ok Back to work on the Monte Carlo . I installed the new Battery Cables and 19" Flex Fan with 2" Spacer . Like one Guy Did remind me them Fans are very Sharp . I was Careful and did not Cut myself . Lets see if this Joker will start with the New Battery Cables My Good Friend T.J Made me that Cool Key Chain Thank You
I also had a Small Boxs of Parts show up today from Summit . Check out this Dual 2-5/8"Gauge Set up I Bought for the Monte Carlo. It Looks real COOL Like the Old Hot Rod Style . Also very Heavy and Well Made . And you Can't Beat the Price $31.95 Part # SUM-G2972
Tango, awesome work! It really sounds healthy too. The gauges are nice too. We just installed a set in My son's car in the same place, but went with Autometer Z series.
awesome job!

The night before I went on line checking part cost and item #s . O'Reilly auto had the best price on my brake parts .
I paid $105.00 for all of the parts on the ground
I went with organic pads just for now because they won't rust up from sitting . They are Dangerous to use and they do not stop well . Once this car hits the street and is dialed in . I will up-grade to Ceramic Pads . Here are the Old Rotor's Rotors are not cheap for these car's . I was going to take a trip to my Local Junk Yard and see what I could find . But O'Reilly had these made in china Rotor's for 24.99 each . I hope that the first time they get Hot they don't turn into Scrap Iron for the Metal Man ?
Next I did some cleaning of my Frame and used some Rust Converter on it . Not a Great idea to Let your car just sit for over 10 years . Yes it will take a lot of work and money to bring it back
Then some Chassis Black Paint . No I am not trying for 1st place in a Car Show
Now for the new front Brakes . I painted the hubs of the rotors if not tomorrow they would be Rust Brown .
Here is the Drivers side next is to make my steel front Lines Eastwood has a Line kit that comes with all the GM Large head type fittings . I will Have to call them Monday
I made both Front Brake Lines from the Caliper Hoses to the Proportioning Valve . They came out nice and it was not to bad of a job
Well I filled up my Brake Master and the Brake Fluid was Raining Down ? Not from the New Lines ? No from the Two Lines that come from the Master Cylinder to the Proportioning Valve ? Them two Lines Looked Fairly Clean ? Well were the hold down clamp went on the Frame . That's the Spot were they Rotted out
Now these Line are a real Bear to change . And with this Engine re-installed and to make things worse Headers too . I had to cut flare and Bend them from a roll of Line . Yes I am told no one is making them for G-Body GM Car's B.O everywhere in the U.S.A Don't make Seance to me with all the Folks out of work . Yes I bitched but I can make them You want to try and take the Old Line's off in one Piece so you can match and make the new one's Like OEM .
This is the Tight spot Or the Bear of this Job I removed my Shift Linkage to make a Little more room to work . this is why my hands are so messed up . To many year of all this fun stuff .
Here's a Close up Photo were I wiggled the Camera between the header .
I had a bunch of yard work to do today And my wife is mad at me for living out in that garage most every weekend But I did Bleed out them brakes on the Monte . Took some doing tried to use the hand vac Pump to suck the brake fluid through the Lines first . Then Like always no one to help So I stuck a Board against the Seat and Brake Pedal and did a Wheel at a Time . Front Brake where Locking down good . Rear so-so . I know I will need to do more work on them back brakes . Now I am thinking about dropping that TH350C trans . I might have a Line on a Better Non-Computer TH-350 tran's .
Well the Corvette Guy that I know set me up with this Fresh Re-Built TH-350 that came out of his son's Totaled Camaro . Very Nice Guy gave me a real good deal on this Trans . And he said by the way that trans was built with a Shift Kit Hope that's Ok ? I said thanks for letting me know that's even better new's to me . I will be install my New Stall Speed and Cooler too .
I am Old School and not much into Highway Cruising 3-Speed auto with stall Speed and 3.73-4.10 Gear is just right for what I want to do
Removed my TH-350C more fun The Trans would not Lower with the Ear's on the Case hitting my Headers . Had to Loosing up One Header . Trans Fluid everywhere
Also changed the Front Pump Seal and Flex Plate .
Hey that New Converter is kind of small for a 2800 Stall ? Stock type 13" Converter on the Right .
